Scott and Susan Jones
Scott Jones |

Scott and Susan Jones are avid sailors, living aboard their 40' sail boat on California's central coast. A plan developed about five years ago to go cruising. Scott and Susan sold their home and moved aboard a 34' wooden sail boat, and began rebuilding this boat for their journey. After 4 years living on a small wooden boat, and watching new problems appear faster than the old ones could be solved, they purchased their current boat, a 40' Challenger ketch. While out fitting this boat for cruising, the love of wood boats inspired the purchase of a 28' wooden cutter; Kittiwake. This is the vessel pictured on this website.
Through their experiences rebuilding their original wooden boat, and refitting their current fiberglass boat, they have acquired much knowledge about the how to's, and how not to's of boats. Through the alliances made in the sailing community, they have learned much about the sea, and cruising, and through their own experiences, they have learned much about sailing. Scott's love of boats dates back to childhood experiences including canoeing, a trip on an ice-breaker, and an opportunity to steer a ferry boat on the James River at a very early age. More recently, his experience as a member of Cordell Expeditions, has inspired this love of the sea. Susan's introduction to boats was no quite as gradual. Her first introduction to sailing was a day sail with a skipper who was so nervous, he would not shut the engine down, and after the first hour, began cutting back his cuticles with a razor. Her second sailing experience was the maiden voyage of their first wooden boat from San Francisco Bay, to Moss Landing, Ca. This voyage was made under power, due to the rigging not being ready, and with very limited preparation, due to the boat yard going out of business during the refit of this vessel. Add to that, high winds, and 20' seas during this 100 mile trip, and a severe leak, and it has the making of an epic adventure.
